“Swallows Under Eaves” is a 25-minute historical fiction film that unfolds the self-discovery journey of Wu Yi-Fang (吴贻芳), a distinguished Chinese female scholar who was recommended to study at the University of Michigan in the 1920s, later becoming the first female college president in China. This film follows how her experiences of family loss and camaraderie in Michigan led her from intending to pursue research in the U.S. to committing herself to women’s education back in China. This project was initiated as Tianyi Zhai’s senior honors thesis production project in the Department of Film and Television Media at the University of Michigan.
